A Slipware Oil Lamp, England or Holland, Late Medieval, c. 1400
Description
A superb late Medieval oil lamp, made for free standing or wall hanging. Probably made by Flemish Huguenot immigrants, this splendid slip-decorated piece of essential household equipment was in use up to 600 years ago.
A skillful and sophisticated example of one-piece throwing on a primitive kick-wheel with altered and applied pieces including spout, drip-tray and a raised hanging tab to create a versatile oil lamp for use in different situations within the home.
To have survived these centuries intact is extraordinary.
