Slipware Salt Kit, Tyne-Side, North-East of England, 1876
Description
A charming and amusingly decorated salt kit from one of the numerous potteries of the North-East of England, the Tyne and Wear region, Sunderland or Newcastle.
Humorously and naïvely decorated with what appears to be two goats or most likely rocking horses, with additional fern leaves, under the hood of the kit the date 1876, what the decoration has to do with salt, goodness knows! A hanging strap and a pinched knop for lifting. A wonderful and rare thing.
The 17th century oak barrel used for storing salt, called a ‘kit’ was replaced by these marvellous and convenient later pottery alternatives (with no lid to break or lose, just a hood for access, keeping dust off and allowing air circulation to prevent dampness, brilliant!).
