Here we have a rare and charming group of children playing on a woodland gate made by the fine Staffordshire potter Thomas Parr in circa. 1869, based on the painting “Happy as a King” by William Collins.
Detail from a print of the painting, “Happy as a King” by William Collins R.A. The painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836. A wonderful example of how the potters selected, simplified and adapted their original source.
