Rustic Slipware Bird Whistle, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, Mid-To-Late 19th Century

A rare opportunity to purchase a superb Halifax rusticware cuckoo-call bird whistle, perched on a tree stump modelled to represent bark. Extremely fashionable during the Arts and Crafts period of the mid-to-late 19th century and a very traditional item of the Halifax potteries for over two hundred years.

A most realistic dove or cuckoo call is produced by blowing through the tail, controlling the resultant whistle by intermittent opening and closing of the hole in the chest with the forefinger.

Finally glazed over in a strong rich Galena glaze, bringing out all the wonderful colours of a true piece of slipware.
