Miniature Slipware Elephants, Staffordshire, England, circa 1820
Description
A delightful pair of model or toy slipware elephants, early 19th century, Staffordshire, England.
Extremely rare survivors, by the moulded bases, almost certainly Staffordshire, of Whieldon characteristics with splashes of copper green, but slightly later.
Charming pieces made either as miniatures or as true toys, it is a wonder they have survived at all, especially as a pair. The bases do have small chips and appear to have been played with. They also retain the remnants of an old paper label of a previous collector.
