A Rare Slipware Documentary Flowerpot and Stand, Buckley, North Wales, 1885
Description
Here we have a superb slipware flowerpot and base from the centuries-old Buckley potteries of North Wales made in the last quarter of the 19th century. The flowerpot incised in sgraffito “Mrs. Foulkes, Llannerch-y-Môr 1885” (close to Prestatyn and Holywell).
The ornamental flowerpot has hand-moulded tendrils, leaves and flowers surrounding it with a beautifully slip-decorated sgraffito leaf-patterning to the base, a superb example of 19th century Welsh pottery folk art.
A rare survivor indeed, complete with its original base, the majority of these marvellous flowerpots have usually lost their original bases over the years and have either a non-matching/later replacement or nothing at all. The pot and base also have limescale to the interior, evidence of use over many years.
Date
1885
Dimensions
7.5’’ D x 10’’ H O/A approx.
Condition
In good condition, the pot has a few small minor knocks and repairs. It also has an ancient hairline on part of the base but is completely firm and stable. Minor wear commensurate with age and use on a flowerpot and base that have been used for nearly 150 years. A wonderful thing.
