A Rare Cliviger Slipware Double-Spouted Teapot, Lancashire, England, 1915

Description

Today we have a superb agate teapot from Cliviger, made for a Mr. Smith in 1915. Also in the hero shot is a fine documentary puzzle jug made in 1891, also for a Mr. (T) Smith) some twenty four years earlier.

Made towards the closure of the marvellous Cliviger Potteries, pots were made here from the mid-18th century in almost continuous production supplying ornamental and utilitarian slipwares to the working people of Lancashire during the Industrial Revolution right through to the outbreak of the First World War.

This pottery has a fascinating history producing wares that latterly closely resembled the highly-skilled wares from Elland in Halifax, so much so that the likelihood of a link exists between the families of the two sites, there is still much research to do here.

Wares from this pottery can be identified usually quite easily from the materials used and the Lancashire documentary place names. Wonderful.
