A Mid-19th C. Burton-In-Lonsdale Puzzle Jug, Yorkshire, England

Description

Rare in this condition, we have here for sale a superb agateware puzzle jug with galena glaze over, from the Burton potteries, made this time by the Bateson family. These puzzle jugs were highly prized and passed down through the families for generations.

Impressed with letter type in free-hand, it reads “Gentlemen drink and let your skill be tested, & a forfeit made if anything be wasted”. A wonderful drinking wager with a good soaking for the unwary!
