A Rare Slipware Agate Hen and Chickens Moneybox Staffordshire, England, Mid 19th C.

Description

These ornamental pottery moneyboxes were wonderful gifts made by the local earthenware village potter and given by parents to their children at Christmas and birthdays in order to encourage thrift.

With only minute, ancient nibbles, this pot is in as perfect condition as you could ever hope to find in a near-200 year old child’s plaything, these were bought very cheaply as a savings bank and often broken open by the eager child to retrieve their savings. A delightful piece of early-to-mid-19th century slipware pottery.
