Slipware Sgraffito Bird Tile, England, Late 19th-Early 20th Century

Description

Here we have an outstanding and rare slipware Sgraffito tile of a bird, possibly a crow.

Freely and swiftly drawn by a remarkably skilled hand, it has the lead glaze, crazing, wear and discolouration commensurate with age, but quite a lightweight tile so probably late 19th or early 20th c.

This tile was considered significant enough to be a part of the inventory of Jonathan Horne, the eminent London antiques dealer, in the mid-1980s.

Needs more research for an accurate provenance, but this tile is obviously of considerable importance and certainly has the appearance, materials and stylistically, of the Bernard Leach pottery community of St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
