A stunning large antique slipware and agateware cradle, Yorkshire England, early 20th century.

A fabulous and rare cradle beautifully hand modelled in the true Halifax tradition and certainly one of the last of this quality to be produced, made in the unmistakable traditional style of the Kitsons of Woodman house, with a fascinating early 20^th century date.

The Kitsons became known throughout Yorkshire for these superb ornamental cradles with ‘V notch’ edging and agate clay, applied corbelled pinnacles and mushroom buttons for cat covers, skilfully made, standing on rockers, glazed with a bright and shiny glaze and finally a family of birds around the hood and sitting on the end of the cradle, welcoming young Violet Gee into the world.

These iconic cradles were the very pinnacle of folk art to emerge from the Yorkshire Country Potteries of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

This wonderful piece commissioned perhaps as a revival during the late Victorian-early Edwardian early Art Nouveau period and possibly by a relation of the pottery family, beautifully and skilfully crafted, these pottery cradles were made throughout the 19^th century.
