Slipware Agate Pigeon Moneybox, Bellevue, Rye, Sussex, England, 19th Century
Description
An extremely rare large slipware pigeon moneybox from the Mitchell’s Bellevue Pottery, Rye, Sussex, made for Alice Haylor. This pot is entwined with the hop vines and leaves so associated with the Southern Counties. Late 19th century.
This fine example of pottery folk art is modelled in solid agateware and the pigeon is about to drop a coin into the slot. There is also an opening in the base of the pot still retaining the original cork, ensuring safe removal of the coins and leaving this wonderful ornamental keepsake intact.
