A Slipware Flagon, North Devon, England, 19th Century
Description
A fabulous and rare piece of North Devon Pottery history, mid-19th century or slightly later, a museum piece.
Whosoever conceived this extraordinary piece has taken a contemporary, or older, North Devon pottery flagon and skilfully reproduced by hand in high detail and in oils, an early Egyptian tomb scene after the contemporary fashion for Egyptian antiquities in the early-to-mid 19th century. Detailed images of sacred antelopes and jackals surrounded by tomb wall patterns, and after decoration the delicate surface has been sealed with a protective layer of varnish.
A strong possibility of an Edwin Beer Fishley connection, perhaps through J. Phillips the historian, the Schliemann exhibition and other London museums, or earlier.
Simply a wonderful thing to hold and admire.
