A Pearlware Char Dish, Staffordshire, England, Mid-19th Century
Description
A mid-19th century Char dish, purpose-made for the presentation and shipping of Char from the Lake District to the busy urban centres of England during the late 18th to the mid 19th century.
The dish is beautifully and naïvely decorated with four bat-printed (an early type of transfer) and hand-painted Char around the circumference.
Char were a gourmet delicacy caught only in the deep glacial lakes of Ullswater and Windemere. These miniature Icelandic Salmon (or Vendace) trapped in these lakes for millennia after the ice age receded came originally from Norway, and have thrived here ever since.
