Slipware Shoe Moneybox, Bridgewater, Somerset, West Country, England, 19th C.
Description
A delightful child’s Moneybox made in the form of a workman’s clog.
Hand-made and moulded in a coarse pale terracotta fabric with a heavy iron content resulting in a speckled Galena glaze, with impressed details of lace holes, tongue, sole and stitching.
A rare survivor as these moneyboxes were cheaply made for children to learn the importance of thrift at Christmas and birthdays. Unfortunately, they were often broken when full, by the enthusiastic owner, to remove the accrued wealth from the box.
