Queen Caroline Treacle-Glazed Figural Window Stops, circa. 1825
Description
An exquisite, pair of treacle-glazed window stops modelled after Queen Caroline, estranged wife of George IV, who was well remembered by the populace for her eccentricities even after her death in 1821.
Window stops were introduced during the Georgian era before the advent of lead weighted sashes in the Victorian period. They were created as an ornamental inward facing device essential to hold windows open by a few inches to circulate air around the house, before this, a block of wood or similar had to be used. This striking pair of window stops are particularly fine with wonderful crisp mouldings made in a buff low-fired stoneware fabric dabbed unevenly with a manganese oxide, the rich treacle-glaze flowing over them in a much-admired ‘Whieldon’ style.
