A Rare Agate Barton Tavern One Pint Frog Mug, Lancashire, England, 1901.
Description
Here we have quite a large and splendid sliptrailed agateware “Barton Tavern” ale mug with a thumb rest, and a frog inside for good health.
Almost certainly from one of the Lancashire country potteries, probably Cliviger.
There was a Barton near Preston at this time, and there still is. Possibly made for the landlord to be used by patrons as a ‘house’ drinking mug. It is unusual to find a nice country pottery frog mug in absolutely excellent condition. A rare thing indeed.
