A Greenware Art Nouveau Candle Stick, Farnham, Surrey, England, Late 19th C.

Description

Today we have for sale a fine and rare large Art Nouveau candle stick made in the Medieval style from the wonderful Farnham potteries, made by either of the two brothers Absalom or William Freemantle-Harris.

These outstanding pots were the height of fashion during the Art Nouveau period and many of the Farnham pottery designs were retailed through Liberty’s of London.

With an extraordinary rich and varied green glaze created by the alchemy of the strong copper lead glaze and the fierce kiln atmospheres. Absolutely superb.

Date
19th century.

Dimensions
12’’ H x 5’’ O/A approx. at widest part (drip tray)

Condition
In very good condition overall with only minor kiln imperfections to be expected and is common with this type of pottery along with minor wear commensurate with age and use.

There is a small very neatly drilled hole on the base at the back of the candle stick in order to introduce electrification, which we have to say would look magnificent, illuminated by electric light. This can easily just be turned to the back or it could be restored by us in house at no further expense.
