A Rare and Splendid Slipware Cupid Flask after Marc Louis Solon

Description

Today we have for sale a superb slipware flask after Marc Louis Solon in the aesthetic style, and a copy of his book The Art of the Old English Potter.

Solon, a highly skilled French industrial ceramic artist and designer was given work in the Sèvres Ceramics Factory, where he began to perfect a complicated technique called Pâte-sur-Pâte (Clay-on-Clay) which involved the overlaying of different thin layers of slip to create depth of detail on the surface of the clay, this was within the years of 1862 to 1870.

Solon moved from France to England in 1870 to flee the Franco-Prussian War, he gained employment with the Mintons Pottery Factory in Stoke-On-Trent where he perfected this technique.

During his early years in Staffordshire, Solon collected local pottery and having researched extensively, used this collection as a basis for his 1883 publication, The Art of the Old English Potter, a book about the Staffordshire pottery produced before Wedgwood transformed the industry.

One of the fields that he felt particularly drawn to was the art of the Slipware potters, as it related closely to the field he was working in.

Marc Louis Solon, born Montauban, France 1835, died Stoke-On-Trent, England 1913.
