A Delightful Pair of King Charles Spaniels, Mid-To-Late 19th C., North Devon, England
Description
Here we have a delightful pair of smaller mid-19th century North Devon Barnstaple King Charles Spaniels. Pressed by hand from a simple two-piece mould then dabbed with both manganese and white slip, finally a rich raw galena glaze over and fired only once. Rare to find a pair, usually just the odd occasional single, often damaged.
These marvellous country pottery Devon Dogs represent some of the finest examples of English pottery Folk Art. It is fascinating to see how they compare with the Staffordshire whiteware pottery dogs from which their moulds were taken and the different, less industrial, naïve artistic application given to them by the North Devon country potters, and how they successfully managed to make something equally iconic, delightful and desirable.
