Early Iconic 19th Century Burton-In-Lonsdale Puzzle Jug, Old West Riding of Yorkshire, 1822

Description

Here we have a superb puzzle jug, made in the reign of George IV, by John Baggaley of the Bridge End Pottery in the old West Riding of Yorkshire, west of Ingleton, near the Lancashire Border.

Ornamental fretwork repeat patterns below the rim, then around the waist, slip-trailed boldly and precisely the legend “Gentlemen now try your skill, I’ll hold you sixpence if you will, that you don’t drink unless you spill”. Naïve early 19th century lettering and spelling carefully picked out and sitting on lines neatly incised on the potter’s wheel at the time of making, all done by a highly skilled hand.

An extremely rare survivor from the Burton-In-Lonsdale slipware potteries at this early date, especially in this condition, over 200 years old and a wonderful example of folk art pottery.
