A Pair of Rare Agate Slipware Plates, Staffordshire, England, Early 19th Century

Description

A superb pair of extremely rare and fine Agate Slipware Staffordshire plates.

Multifaceted (with 9 sides), consisting of three-tone Agateware and rich white slip under a strong yellow iron glaze. Made on a hump mould with embossed hearts (or trefoils), ovoids and lozenges in a technique closely similar to the more primitive Staffordshire Slipware plates of a century earlier.

On close inspection, engrained dirt and wear indicative of age and use within the pronounced crazing and minor edge chipping.

The coarse firing pads or stilts used to support these plates in the kiln are not the fine spurs developed later in the century to conceal firing marks.

Early 19th century.
