A Large Rare Wiltshire Blackware Puzzle Jug, Late 18th Century
Description
A large and magnificent Wiltshire Blackware puzzle jug. Extremely rare, especially in this fine condition.
These wonderful puzzle jugs were complicated to construct with many stages to complete but they were much admired and fashionable, so the problems associated with manufacturing them was worthwhile.
Producing 18th century Blackware with the manganese saturated coarse iron ore (Galena) adding to the powerful fluxing and flowing of the volatile glaze. Great care and skill were needed to control and prevent it from running down the pot like hot butter, blocking drinking spouts and sticking to the shelves in the kiln.
