A Fine Slipware King Charles Spaniel Seated On A Plinth, c.1830

Description
A finely detailed and rare English or Scottish Slipware King Charles Spaniel, seated on an elegant plinth embossed with swags of leaves and flowers. The handsome spaniel is extremely well modelled with sharply detailed moulding with separate front legs (a complicated technique only used on finer pieces), the tail made of encrusted clay, again, a detail of only the higher quality Staffordshire figures of the 1830/40s.
Finally, a clear glaze is coated over the buff body, the glaze then dabbed with manganese oxide, reproducing the wonderful and much-admired Tortoiseshell flowing glaze-effect pioneered in the 18th century by Thomas Whieldon, giving an overall superb and striking finish.
