Horace Elliott – Artist in Pottery, 1851-1938 by Jonathan Gray

Description

During the late 19th/early 20th centuries, many of the country potteries that had survived for centuries were having to close due to the immense pressures they were being put under by competition from the cheap Staffordshire whitewares and it was during this period that a small number of artist designer potters stepped in to help these slipware country potteries to develop new fashionable, more artistic wares to help them compete.

Jonathan Gray is a Ceramics Associate and friend of mine. He has produced here an inspired volume of work written over a ten year period dedicated to the life and work of Horace Elliott, a designer and artist potter.

Horace worked with several pottery manufacturers but had a particular appreciation of Ewenny & its history and worked with the potters there over several years designing the iconic Ewenny pig jugs and cats, among many other artistic endeavours.

As Paul Atterbury states in his foreword to the book – “This important industrial designer is absent from both Arts & Crafts and ceramic literature. This book brings Horace Elliott back to life and rescues him from the rather extraordinary oblivion that has surrounded him since his death.”

An impressive large format and weighty tome of over 400 pages. Jonathan is to be congratulated for producing such a magnificent important book on the subject.
