A Rare Slipware King Charles Spaniel, North Devon, England, 19th Century
Description
Here we have a delightful smaller mid-19th century North Devon slipware King Charles Spaniel. Pressed by hand from a simple two-piece mould then dabbed with both manganese and white slip, finally a rich raw galena glaze over and fired once only.
This marvellous country pottery Barnstaple Dog represents some of the finest examples of English pottery Folk Art. It is fascinating to see how it compares with the Staffordshire whiteware pottery dogs from which its mould was taken and the different, less industrial, naïve artistic application given to it by the North Devon country potters, and how they successfully managed to make something equally iconic, delightful and desirable.
