A Rare and Ornamental Earthenware Circus Elephant Moneybox, Yorkshire, England, 19th C.
Description
Here we have a delightful mid-to-late 19th century lead-glazed earthenware child’s moneybox from one of a number of the small South Yorkshire potteries.
A rare circus elephant moneybox on an ornamental plinth with a bright & attractive tortoise-shell lead glaze, it would be a delightful and fashionable present for any young child to encourage thrift in the last quarter of the 19th century.
Almost certainly modelled on Jumbo the famous circus elephant of the Victorian period.
Considering the risk and harsh environment of holding the savings of a small child, these moneyboxes were frequently broken open to retrieve the savings, this wonderful and rare moneybox is an extraordinary survivor.
