A Pair of Rare Barkware Posy Vases, Soil Hill, Ogden, England, 19th Century

Description

Here we have for sale a pair of rustic posy vases, extremely fashionable during the Arts and Crafts period of the mid-to-late 19th century.

Made by the Buttons at the Soil Hill Pottery, Ogden, Halifax in the early 1900s. Eminently suited to the contemporary fashions of the time for ferns, floral displays and posies.

At the turn of the century, with their markets under the threat of industrial commercialisation, many of the country potteries were keen to follow the various new artistic trends to help supplement their income at a very difficult time. The Arts and Crafts movement and the Art Nouveau inspired contemporary artistic fashions along with the wonderful Romantic writers and illustrators of the period (Arthur Rackham, Andrew Lang, Edmund Dulac etc.), with fairies, goblins and woodland trees coming alive. The appeal of this utopian fairy-tale paradise swept the country, with the local potteries all trying to keep up. This exciting and creative period lead these potteries into brave new worlds.

Our superb posy pots here originally belonged to Islwyn Watkins, the late and much-admired country pottery historian who felt they were important enough to have a place in his fine collection, built up over many years.

After the complicated process of throwing these rustic vases on the wheel in one go, complete with their bases, they were slipped, rusticated & carved, dried slowly to avoid such ornamental pieces cracking and finally glazed over in a strong rich Galena, bringing out all the wonderful colours of a true piece of slipware. I adore them.
