A Fine and Rare Ewenny Slipware Vase, Horace Elliot association, South Wales, Late 19th C.

Description

Here we have a superb late 19th c. slipware flower vase from the historic Ewenny potteries in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales.

Hand-thrown with applied and moulded decoration and coarse finish to the base with the same iron runs and tonal glaze typical of the Ewenny country potteries.

The base shows the scars of the clay ‘bobs’ it was stood on to prevent the hot glaze from running off the pot and sticking to the shelf with disastrous results.

Almost certainly Horace Elliot in design, unsigned but contemporary with this period of Ewenny. A desirable and collectable piece.
